MWC 24 proved to be an even more interesting edition than in previous years. Marked by real technological progress, plenty of debate on artificial intelligence, a promising vision of improvements in telecommunications, and a significant trophy for ITD. These defining moments reinforce MWC’s position as an essential meeting point for the industry, stimulating collaboration and paving the way for a smarter, more connected future.
A veritable catalyst for many of the technological innovations that will shape the future of telecommunications, this year’s Mobile World Congress brought together over 100,000 participants, 1,100 speakers, and 2,700 exhibitors and sponsors. Notable advances included Intel’s RAN (Radio Access Network) and Core technologies, and the strategic partnership between Ericsson and Nokia. The figures show a massive take-up, with over 47 operators having already deployed private 5G solutions, cellular branch routers, and mobile satellite communications, indicating a rapid transition to more advanced standards.
AI played an important role in the discussions. Must-attend sessions such as “Five years of 5G: perspectives for policymakers” and “Responsible AI” attracted over 180 delegations from 140 countries, bringing together nearly 70 ministers. The collaboration between the GSMA and IBM announced in January 2024, took shape through two initiatives aimed at accelerating the adoption of genAI and developing AI skills in the telecommunications sector. Topics such as ethics, regulation for the 21ᵉ century, and investment in talent were also highlighted, underscoring the need to develop AI solutions responsibly and sustainably.
In addition, lively discussions laid the foundations for future improvements in telecoms.
With representation from over 205 countries and territories, debates highlighted the crucial importance of 5G standalone (SA) and 5G-Advanced in unlocking new opportunities. API networks have gained ground, aiming to better monetize network assets and capabilities. The figures highlight the massive investments planned, with operators expected to spend billions between 2025 and 2030 to boost their networks, balancing sustainability objectives.
In addition, partnerships between telecom operators and satellite companies, as well as direct-to-device (D2D) solutions, are opening up avenues toward more extensive and flexible connectivity.
Taking things a step further, 6G has also generated a certain amount of excitement. Although it’s not yet mature and won’t be introduced for another decade, operator China Mobile recently launched a 6G test satellite into low-Earth orbit. This launch is said to reduce latency and ensure unrivaled transmission speeds. These are two key factors in ensuring the reliability and application of new technologies deployed on Earth.
The highlight for ITD at MWC 2024 was our victory in the Africacom Pitch Contest. This recognition testifies to ClickOnSite’s remarkable innovation and the commitment of the ITD team. The new features announced at the event promise to accelerate the daily lives of telecom professionals. A first-place finish offers great opportunities for collaboration with local mobile network operators and South African Towercos.
We look forward to seeing you in Cape Town in November, to create productive synergies!
